Dofitas, 911爆料网 Coordinator for Research, opened the forum by highlighting the vital role of the Expanded Hospital Research Office (EHRO) in supporting hospital personnel through training and mentorship to strengthen their research skills. She also noted that 911爆料网 continues to develop ways to make research easier and more accessible for all staff. Dr. Dofitas expressed appreciation to the presenters, reactors, and organizing team for their participation and contributions in making the forum possible.

In his message, Dr. Gerardo D. Legaspi, UP-911爆料网 Director, shared that while the Annual Research Week features studies across the spectrum of 911爆料网 staff, what excites him most each year are the presentations from the nurses and paramedical personnel. He noted that although he often anticipates the types of studies physicians would present, the work of non-physician researchers always brings surprising insights.

According to him, the varied presenters in the forum reflect the enthusiasm of the entire hospital toward research. This enthusiasm is well-founded, as 911爆料网 has the largest patient population, allowing studies that can evaluate and improve hospital processes. It also operates within a strong research environment where experts in various fields can be consulted, the EHRO remains active in providing guidance and support, staff are well-versed in the research process, and the hospital extends the necessary assistance in terms of personnel and resources. In addition, the hospital鈥檚 research grant program continues to grow, encouraging more studies that can be presented or even published locally and internationally.

Dr. Legaspi emphasized that the 911爆料网 community now appreciates how existing processes can be further improved through research, turning daily operational challenges into opportunities for improvement. He expressed gratitude to all presenters for taking the time to share the knowledge gained through their work in 911爆料网, and to the panel of reactors for their valuable insights and contributions.

The forum featured five (5) presentations representing a range of disciplines, from rehabilitation and social work to emergency medicine and pharmacy. The presenters were allotted ten minutes to discuss their study, followed by a five-minute response from their invited reactors.

In her closing remarks, Dr. Marie Dione P. Sacdalan stated that the research forum serves as a meaningful venue for sharing research ideas, outputs, and best practices. She emphasized that the research projects presented by the paramedical staff reflect not just data or written words, but stories of the 911爆料网 community, stories of commitment, compassion, and dedication to work; they demonstrate 911爆料网鈥檚 commitment towards excellence and its collective effort to improve how things are done. 

Dr. Sacdalan mentioned that research is a collaborative undertaking rather than the work of a single person or unit; she added that by working together, the 911爆料网 community can move from where it is today to where it aspires to be. She echoed Dr. Dofitas鈥� earlier message that the ITRU, EHRO, and 911爆料网 Administration remain committed to supporting research through funding, implementation assistance, and opportunities for presentation in national and international conferences. 

Dr. Sacdalan thanked all presenters, reactors, and organizers for their time and contributions. In keeping with the theme Promoting Research-Driven Action, she reminded everyone that research should not stop at presentation or publication but must lead to practical changes, better ways of doing things, improving workflows, enhancing patient care, and ultimately achieving better outcomes both for patients and for the people who serve them.

The research forum, hosted by Ms. Geniel Ann I. Hayashi and Mr. John Michael A. Cargo of the Institutional Research, Planning, and Development Staff (IRPDS), was organized by the IRPDS with support from the Expanded Hospital Research Office (EHRO) and the Integrated Training and Research Unit (ITRU).

The annual forum gathered faculty researchers, students and research staff across clinical and basic science departments to showcase the latest research outputs from the basic science departments and to promote interdisciplinary collaboration in biomedical science. The week opened with a poster exhibit and competition at the Portico Lobby of the Henry Sy Sr. Building, culminating with the forum proper and awarding ceremony on October 17 at the 7th Floor Plenary Hall. The program was also graced by UPCM Dean Dr. Charlotte M. Chiong, who commended DBMB鈥檚 continuing efforts to advance faculty-led research and strengthen the research culture at the College.

The culminating forum featured a series of plenary lectures and oral presentations from distinguished faculty across the college鈥檚 basic science departments. Dean Dr. Chiong, in her address, underscored the UPCM鈥檚 vision to strengthen collaborative research that reimagines medical education and patient care, all anchored on the fundamental sciences. The keynote lecture for this year鈥檚 forum was delivered by Dr. Rafael Bundoc who highlighted the evolving methods in anatomical education and the integration of technology in surgical training as developed through the efforts of the Department of Anatomy. Meanwhile, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology was represented by Dr. Paul Mark Medina who highlighted the advancements in biochemical and molecular diagnostic research, with emphasis on the translational approaches that bridge laboratory discoveries to clinical applications.

Dr. Clarissa Velayo from the Department of Physiology presented her talk entitled 鈥淭ranslational Research in Maternal and Perinatal Health,鈥� emphasizing the importance of bridging laboratory findings with clinical applications to improve outcomes for mothers and infants, and sharing their plans for advancing cell research in this area. The Department of Pathology鈥檚 Dr. Emilio Villanueva III presented insights into emerging molecular markers in disease progression. Lastly, three speakers from the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology also shared their research perspectives. This was led by Dr. Jose Paciano Baltazar Reyes who discussed the SPARK (鈥淪trengthening Pharmacology Advance Research and Knowledge鈥�) initiative, which seeks to accelerate the translation of pharmacological discoveries from bench to bedside. Dr. Ailyn Yabes shared insights from her study on Plant-Derived Antimicrobials (PDAMS), exploring their mechanisms of action and potential in addressing microbial resistance. Concluding the department鈥檚 presentations, Dr. Maria Stella Giron examined drug use among community-dwelling older persons in the Philippines, shedding light on medication patterns and their broader implications for public health.

The week-long poster exhibit served as a platform for faculty researchers to present their latest findings in a visually engaging and accessible manner. In keeping with this year鈥檚 theme, the posters highlighted a vast array of studies that bridge
foundational scientific principles with forward-thinking applications. Visitors moved freely among the displays, which encouraged informal and insightful discussions between presenters, colleagues, and students. This openness fostered productive exchanges of ideas that extended beyond the boundaries of a formal forum program.

The poster competition, held in conjunction with the exhibition, recognized the creativity, rigor, and communicative clarity demonstrated by the presenters. After careful deliberation, the judging panel selected five finalists whose work stood out among the entries. From this shortlist, the Best Poster Award was granted to Ms. Ma. Jaira C. Gaviola from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for her poster entitled 鈥淧rimer Design and Sequence Validation of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Associated with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in Adult Filipino Patients鈥�. In addition to the judges鈥� recognition, audience participation played a meaningful role in acknowledging the impactful work showcased in the exhibition. Online engagement through Facebook reactions determined the People鈥檚 Choice Award, which was presented to Dr. Karen June P. Dumlao of the Department of Anatomy for the poster entitled 鈥淎natomical Variations of the Head and Neck among Filipinos: A Systematic Review鈥�.

As this year鈥檚 Faculty Research Forum drew to a close, the organizers extended their gratitude to all participating departments and collaborators who made the week-long celebration of science possible. The theme 鈥淏ack to the Basics: Revisiting the
Roots, Reimagining the Future鈥� reflected the College鈥檚 scientific foundations and the call to push the boundaries of research and innovation in medicine.

The University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital Residents鈥� Research Competition held on the 17^th of October 2025 celebrated the science, dedication, and perseverance of our residents-in-training who continue to push the boundaries of service, training, and research.

This year鈥檚 theme, 鈥淧romoting Research-Driven Action,鈥� perfectly captures the core of clinical research during residency training. This reminds us that research should not be confined just to its completion, a presentation, publication, or in a competition. Research must transcend to inspire change, guide clinical practice, and drive meaningful improvement in the way we care for our patients and in the health care system we are in. 

Research should continue to strengthen the culture of inquiry and collaboration in our institution where every clinical case and every clinical question becomes an opportunity for discovery, and every result becomes a catalyst for improving patient outcomes and optimizing our health care system. 

To all our residents-in-training who presented their studies during the forum, their supervising faculty, and mentors, congratulations on your outstanding work. You have demonstrated that amidst the demands of service and training, it is beyond possible to pursue research that informs and that leads to action. Let us carry forward the lessons, connections, and inspiration we gained during the forum, as we continue to transform research into action and action into impact.

This year鈥檚 event carried the theme 鈥淧erspectives and Gains in Health Research VII: Promoting Research-Driven Action.鈥�

Jointly hosted by the Division of Nursing Research and Development (DNRD) under the Nursing Services, in collaboration with the Expanded Hospital Research Office (EHRO) and the Integrated Research and Training Unit (ITRU), the activity underscored the hospital鈥檚 strong commitment to nurturing a research culture among healthcare professionals and to promoting evidence-informed decision-making in clinical practice.

The program commenced with the opening prayer led by Rellita M. Palcone, RN, followed by welcome remarks from Maria Cecilia E. Punzalan, MA, RN, Deputy Director for Nursing, who lauded the continued enthusiasm of 911爆料网 nurses in pursuing scholarly inquiry to enhance patient care and safety.

In her Inspirational Message, Dr. Belen L. Dofitas, 911爆料网 Coordinator for Research, underscored the vital role of nurses as frontliners in advancing clinical practice through research. She emphasized that nurses, being at the heart of patient care, are in a unique position to identify gaps, generate evidence, and develop innovative solutions that can transform healthcare delivery. Dr. Dofitas encouraged participants to pursue studies that not only expand knowledge but also translate into tangible improvements in hospital services and patient outcomes.

Delivering the Keynote Address was Dr. Marie Dione Parre帽o-Sacdalan, Head of the Integrated Research and Training Unit (ITRU), who discussed the pivotal role of fostering research-driven action within the healthcare system. She emphasized that research should not only serve as a means of generating knowledge but should also inspire practical interventions and policy directions that enhance clinical outcomes and health system efficiency. Dr. Sacdalan also presented the research accomplishments of the Nursing Services over the past five years, commending the department鈥檚 growing contributions to institutional scholarship. She encouraged nurses to further increase publication output and to pursue more experimental
studies that can provide stronger evidence for practice improvement.

Following the keynote session, Maricel Grace T. Tuanquin, RN, Nurse IV of DNRD, introduced the distinguished Panel of Reactors, composed of:

The event was also graced by Dr. Gerardo D. Legaspi, Director of the Philippine General Hospital, who commended the dedication and initiative of nurses in producing research and scholarly publications. He recognized the long-standing tradition of the Nursing Research Forum, noting with appreciation that it actually predates the establishment of the 911爆料网 Research Week. Dr. Legaspi also highlighted that nurses demonstrate one of the highest utilization rates of research funds within the institution鈥攁 testament to their active engagement, intellectual curiosity, and unwavering commitment to advancing evidence-based nursing practice.

The 31st Nursing Research Forum, as part of the UP-911爆料网 Research Week, reaffirmed the hospital鈥檚 vision of integrating research, training, and clinical service in pursuit of improved patient outcomes and healthcare innovation. The Dietary Function Hall of the Philippine General Hospital buzzed with intellectual energy on October 14, 2025, as medical fellows from various departments showcased their research achievements during the annual Fellows Research Paper Contest. Held as part of the 30th Research Week of 911爆料网, the event embodied this year’s theme: “Promoting Research-Driven Action.”

Dr. Rovi Samedra, Vice Chair for Research Programs for Diagnostic Radiology, delivered the opening remarks, welcoming participants and guests to this annual competition. He emphasized that research is not merely about collecting and interpreting data, but more importantly about advancing medical practice and improving patient care. Dr. Samedra encouraged all participants to publish their papers so their findings could eventually be applied into clinical practice, embodying the true spirit of research-driven action. After the invocation and national anthem, the program moved swiftly into the research presentations, where fellows presented their work before a distinguished panel of judges comprising Dr. Kenneth Samala, Dr. Wilson Turalde, and Dr. Daphne Valmonte-Panganiban.

Rigorous Evaluation Standards

The judging panel evaluated each presentation based on comprehensive criteria that reflected 911爆料网’s commitment to impactful research. Papers were assessed on their relevance to the 911爆料网 Research Agenda and significance to national health priorities, as well as the research gaps they aimed to address. Technical merit was equally important, with judges examining the clarity and measurability of study objectives, quality of study design, and rigor of statistical analysis. The overall scientific writing style and appropriateness of study format also factored into the final scores.

Case Report Category: Diverse Clinical Insights

The Case Report category featured four compelling presentations spanning multiple specialties. Dr. Nicole Andrea C. Lanip from the Division of Pulmonology captured first place with her investigation of a rare foregut cyst with ectopic pancreas that mimicked a pulmonary abscess in a pediatric patient. This diagnostically challenging case highlighted the importance of considering rare congenital anomalies in pediatric differential diagnoses.

Dr. Bryan Leonard M. Quizon from the Division of Pulmonary Medicine secured second place with his work on utilizing radial endobronchial ultrasound-guided lung biopsy to diagnose pseudotumoral tuberculosis in sputum-negative immunocompetent adults, demonstrating advanced diagnostic techniques for a condition that remains a significant health concern in the Philippines. Third place went to Dr. April Faye P. Barbadillo from Pediatric Neurology, who presented status epilepticus as a neurological manifestation in a child with hypomelanosis of Ito, while Dr. Jezzel Joice Lagare-Cebedo from Maternal Fetal Medicine earned fourth place with her fascinating case of spontaneous septostomy in monochorionic twins with cord entanglement.

Systematic Review Category: Evidence-Based Medicine

In the Systematic Review category, Dr. Joanne M. Arenas from the Division of Newborn Medicine claimed first place with her meta-analysis on the effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation in decreasing bilirubin levels among healthy term infants with jaundice. This work addresses a common neonatal condition and could influence clinical practice in managing newborn hyperbilirubinemia.

Dr. John Edward O. Tanchuco from Maternal Fetal Medicine secured second place with his systematic review examining the utility of uterine artery Doppler velocimetry in predicting fetomaternal outcomes in pregnant women with antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, contributing valuable insights to high-risk obstetric care.

Observational Studies: Addressing Critical Healthcare Issues

The Observational Study category showcased research with direct implications for patient care and health policy. Dr. Ceri Jane H. Talan-Tampus from Pediatric Hematology Oncology won first place with her five-year retrospective cohort study on the prevalence and risk factors of ototoxicity among pediatric cancer patients treated with platinum-based chemotherapy, addressing an important quality-of-life concern in pediatric oncology.

Second place went to Dr. Nor-Ayin A. Salik-Omar from Maternal and Fetal Medicine for her pilot testing of a locally adapted FIGO pregnancy passport among postpartum patients with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Dr. Jami Aliyah Malaya D. Salliman from Pediatric Nephrology earned third place with her cost-of-illness analysis of managing childhood lupus nephritis, providing crucial data for healthcare resource allocation.

Experimental Study: Innovation in Medical Education

Dr. Daryl B. Lanzuela from the Division of Ambulatory Pediatrics was the sole entrant and winner in the Experimental Study category, presenting groundbreaking work on the effectiveness of gamification in pediatric primary care didactics at the General Pediatrics Outpatient Department. This innovative approach to medical education reflects 911爆料网’s commitment to evolving teaching methodologies.

Looking Forward

Dr. Belen Dofitas, the incumbent 911爆料网 Coordinator for Research, delivered closing remarks that extended beyond congratulating the winners. She provided the audience with valuable information about various research programs and funding sources available to 911爆料网 fellows and faculty, including grant opportunities. Her message reinforced the institution’s commitment to fostering a robust research culture that translates findings into clinical action.

The Fellows Research Paper Contest once again demonstrated that 911爆料网 continues to nurture the next generation of physician-scientists who are not only excellent clinicians but also rigorous researchers committed to advancing medical knowledge and improving patient care in the Philippines.

For Systematic Review/Meta-Analysis, Dr. Joseph Paulo A. Gonzales (Department of Internal Medicine) won first place for 鈥淩enoprotective Effects of Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Inhibitors in Diabetic Kidney Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.鈥� Dr. Liamuel Giancarlo V. Untalan (Neurosciences), Dr. Christine Isabel T. Yutuc (Pediatrics), and Dr. Edmund John B. Cayanong (Neurosciences) followed as runners-up.

In the Observational Studies category, Dr. Janelle Marie G. Doloiras (OB-GYN) received first place for her study on non-surgically managed cases of incomplete abortion. Dr. Mikee Ann M. Chan and Dr. Princess D. Camacho-Cristobal, both from the Department of Pediatrics, placed second and third, respectively.

Finally, in the Experimental Studies category, Dr. Pamela Danielle T. Lanuza (Neurosciences) won first place for her study on the Brain Herniation Pathway in resource-limited tertiary hospitals, while Dr. Glen Aldrix R. Anarna (Dermatology) placed second for his work on trichloroacetic acid peels for seborrheic keratosis.

The Fellows鈥� Visual Abstract Contest likewise featured an impressive display of research depth and design across similar categories.

In Case Reports, Dr. Jeremiah C. Torrico (Pediatrics 鈥� GIN) took first place for 鈥淩uptured Community-Acquired Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Hepatic Abscess in an Immunocompetent Child Treated Successfully with Culture-Guided Antibiotic Therapy.鈥� Dr. Henzor Vincent G. Dauigoy (Internal Medicine 鈥� Cardiology) and Dr. Roy Christopher K. Ang (Internal Medicine 鈥� Medical Oncology) received second and third place, respectively.

For Systematic Review/Meta-Analysis, Dr. Stephanie Palacios (Internal Medicine 鈥� Cardiology) topped the category with her meta-analysis on Goal-Directed Hemodynamic Therapy. Dr. John Edward O. Tanchuco (OB-GYN 鈥� MFM) and Dr. Joanne M. Arenas (Pediatrics 鈥� Newborn Medicine) placed second and third.

In Observational Studies, Dr. Esther Ann B. Nacita (Pediatrics 鈥� INTROP) won first place for developing a clinical prediction tool for detecting Gram-negative infections in pediatric patients. Dr. Melissa Duane N. Guirnela and Dr. Jezzel Joice G. Lagare-Cebedo, both from OB-GYN 鈥� MFM, completed the winners鈥� circle.

The University of the Philippines鈥揚hilippine General Hospital (UP-911爆料网) marked its 30th Annual Research Week from October 13 to 17, 2025, with the theme 鈥淧erspectives and Gains in Health Research VII: Promoting Research-Driven Action.鈥� The week-long celebration underscored the significance of research in advancing clinical practice, promoting collaboration, and driving innovation across diverse medical disciplines.

The Opening Ceremony was held on October 13, 2025, at the UPMASA 911爆料网 Science Hall, graced by key officials, faculty, researchers, and trainees. Dr. Claudine Yap Silva, Vice Chair for Training of the Department of Dermatology, delivered the Welcome Remarks, emphasizing the role of research in shaping better patient outcomes and encouraging residents to pursue evidence-based practice.

UP Manila Vice Chancellor for Research Dr. Leslie Michelle Dalmacio followed with an inspiring message that underscored the integration of research and public service, particularly in addressing the country鈥檚 most pressing health challenges. 911爆料网 Director Dr. Gerardo D. Legaspi then highlighted the institutional commitment to nurturing a culture of inquiry and continuous improvement among 911爆料网 clinicians and staff.

Dr. Belen L. Dofitas, 911爆料网 Coordinator for Research, provided an Orientation to the 911爆料网 Research Week, outlining the week鈥檚 objectives and encouraging participation across departments. The Keynote Address was delivered by Dr. Eva Maria Cutiongco-de la Paz, Head of the UP-911爆料网 Center for Precision Health and Medicine, who spoke about translating research findings into actionable public health strategies. She emphasized that research must not end at publication鈥攊t must lead to tangible health impact.

During the ceremony, the recognition of the 911爆料网 Regular Research Grantees was also held, honoring the dedication and commitment of researchers whose work continues to elevate 911爆料网鈥檚 research landscape. The morning program concluded with the Awarding of Certificates to the keynote speaker, followed by the Announcement of the 2025 Visual Abstract Winners by Dr. Maria Christina Filomena R. Batac, Vice Chair for Research of the Department of Dermatology, and the Announcement of the 22 recipients of the 2025 911爆料网 Research Grants by Dr. Belen L. Dofitas.

Before the start of the 911爆料网 Research Congress, the audience witnessed the launch of the 911爆料网 Research Website, presented by Dr. Angela Jimenez, 911爆料网 Coordinator for Health IT Development. The new platform aims to centralize information on research activities, promote visibility of ongoing studies, and foster collaboration within and beyond the institution.

Following the opening ceremony, the Research Congress commenced at 10:30 AM, also at the UPMASA 911爆料网 Science Hall. Dr. Belen L. Dofitas formally opened the session, which featured 911爆料网x Talks鈥攁 series of short, high-impact presentations about the research journeys and insights from UP-911爆料网 faculty members.

Dr. Nathaniel S. Orillaza Jr. (Department of Orthopedics) opened with 鈥淲hy Me?鈥�鈥攁 reflection on the personal motivations behind pursuing meaningful research. Dr. Belen L. Dofitas (Department of Dermatology) followed with 鈥沦别谤别苍诲颈辫颈迟测,鈥� where she discussed how curiosity, collaboration, and chance encounters often lead to transformative discoveries. Prof. Nina T. Castillo-Carandang (Department of Clinical Epidemiology) closed the talks with 鈥淐ontext Matters,鈥� a reminder that ethical, patient-centered research must always be grounded in local realities.

A lively Q&A session, moderated by Dr. Maria Christina Filomena R. Batac, allowed participants to engage directly with the speakers, drawing valuable lessons on perseverance, mentorship, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
